Children with cleft-lip / cleft palate cannot eat or drink properly. A split runs through the upper lip, up to the nose. A large orifice extends from the lip to the pharynx. These children suffer excruciating pain from the day of their birth. The intake of food and liquids is almost impossible, as everything leaks out of the mouth through the split upper lip. Many infants die because they cannot drink milk with the cleft in their mouths. It simply flows out again before they can swallow. Every day, babies cleft children desperately starve. Those who survive must live with excruciating pain their entire lives. Aside from this, they are set apart from the others and ridiculed.
The Katarina Witt Foundation has supported the Cleft Center in Timisoara in western Rumania for a long time. The world reknowned facial surgeon, Professor Hermann Sailer, works in Timisoara with a team of Rumanian doctors to make sure that under his supervision, these children with cleft-lip / cleft palate have the professional surgery necessary to treat this condition. With the money from donations, the Katarina Witt Foundation could make this surgery possible for these terribly disfigured children right now. An operation costs 400 euros. Additional costs ensue for post-operative care, orthodontic treatments and speech therapy. Please take part in changing the fate of these kids by making a donation to their cause. It could be 10, 20 or maybe even 50 euros. Every donation counts. The surgery that can save a life costs 400 euros.
