When a nail-bomb exploded on December 31st, 2005 in the Indonesian town of Palu, eight people were killed and around fifty severely injured. Among them was little Richie, who lost his leg. His wounds became infected and his condition was life-threatening. His parents are destitute. The Katarina Witt Foundation reacted swiftly: a life-saving operation in Germany and a prosthesis from the Otto Bock Health Care Company were organized and financed.
Thanks to the support of our sponsors, it was possible to send Richie back to Germany in February 2007 to be fitted for a new prosthetic leg.
After the receiving necessary professional medical treatment, Richie got his first prosthetic leg from the Katarina Witt Foundation, which must be regularly adjusted to fit until he is fully grown.
Until now Richie had never recovered from his severe injuries. The wounds constantly became infected. In his hometown, the doctors could not provide him with the necessary treatment. Prof. Dr. Scherer, a physician from Munich, offered to perform an operation on Richie free of charge, at his clinic in Munich.
Richie was ambling through the market on December 31st, 2005, in his hometown Palu, in the Indonesian Province of Sulawest, when a bomb- filled with bullets - exploded nearby. Help came too late for eight of the victims. Around 50 people were severely injured, among them, a young boy named Richie Saputra. Richie’s left leg was schredded. A hellacious pain shot through his entire body.
